Many of our patients find our dental implant procedure much easier than they expected. Your mouth will be completely numb before a small cylinder is placed. In some cases, a temporary crown may be inserted afterward. After Dr. Locante secures your temporary tooth, the healing process begins. The temporary tooth will assist with your chewing and appearance while the implant fuses to the surrounding bone. This process can take several months. Once this happens, we will attach your final crown. It will either go directly onto the implant or onto another piece (called an abutment) which is positioned between the implant and the dental crown.
- Implants take between 3 and 6 months to heal
- A temporary tooth may be inserted
While waiting for dental implants to heal, you will want to avoid foods that might put pressure on the implant. Since implants can’t withstand the force of a normal bite until the bone has attached firmly to the surface of the implant, you will need to be cautious and avoid crunchy and chewy foods. It takes between 3 and 6 months for an implant to become properly integrated into the jaw. You’ll also want to be careful when flossing; your dentist will explain how to gently slide floss between your teeth. You may experience some sensitivity for the first few days after the procedure. We also offer full mouth rejuvenation services to help the rest of your smile look as great as the implant.
Oral Care During the Healing Process
During the healing process, use your mouth to move food away from the implant (this might take some practice). Home-care recommendations will vary from patient to patient.
The type of home-care will depend on a number of factors:
- Shape of the space between teeth
- Distance between the teeth closest to the implant
- Depth of the implant
Although our ceramic dental implants cannot get cavities, it is very important to keep your implant and surrounding teeth extremely clean. Especially in the first month after surgery, you will need to clean your implant gently but consistently after every meal. Your dentist will recommend a non-shredding floss or other cleaning methods. Types of cleaning methods for post-implant maintenance:
- Interdental brushes
- Irrigation and hydroflossing
- Non-Shredding Floss
- Gentle mouth rinse
